Saint Nicholas Saves the Day:

an evil Pagan King, a steadfast Christian Boy, and a kindly Saint

Friday, December 9, at 7:30 pm
at St. Anne Church, 1600 Mount Hope Avenue, Rochester

and

Saturday, December 10, at 7:30 pm
at St. Mary's Church, 15 Clark Street, Auburn

Taken from a manuscript dating from the late 12th century, the mystery play Filius Getronis (The Son of Getron) describes one of the miracles attributed to Saint Nicholas. The play tells the story of a boy abducted from his family to serve a pagan king and how, after a year of prayers, fasting and supplication to the Saint by his mother, the boy is returned to his family, unharmed.  Sung in plainchant, with full translations in the program, this performance brings to life a centuries-old tale of  Saint Nicholas.

Rounding out the program will be Renaissance choral music for the Christmas season, including mass movements by Fayrfax and Compere.  Also included is  a beautiful and very rarely performed Magnificat by Compere, whose compositions have been described as “some of the sweetest music of the 15th century”.

You may also be interested in reading the Program Book (long PDF) and seeing the Mailer we sent out. The Program Book has extensive notes about the music and play you will hear. You can help us with publicity for this rare performance by copying the inside of the mailer and posting it at your workplace or place of worship!
